Go Start Anew

Retirement. “strike another match, go start anew.” ( Bob Dylan, It’s All Over Now Baby Blue)

What a refreshing time it has been to start anew. Painting. Something you can never master, always seeking to learn through disappointments and failures. One of my mentors Daven Anderson gives his students good advice: Show up. Push some paint around. Get lucky! I am about a full year into retirement from my day job and am blessed to be free to paint. Every good guitar player I ever read about was convinced that skipping even one day meant loss of muscle memory. I strive to paint everyday. It;s the only way.

PAINT MARCELINE

"Once Upon A Time"

Watercolor

10 x 20

Honorable Mention

PAINT MARCELINE, Marceline, MO is an annual tribute to Walt Disney in his boyhood hometown in northern Missouri. More than 40 artists competed on Saturday, August 27, 2016. I chose the restored boyhood home of Walt. I have always been inspired by his humble recognition that the artists around him were much better animators than he was. Nonetheless he was able to orchestrate an entire new genre of film making – the feature length animated movie. My painting was recognized with an Honorable Mention prize.

CHIRPS

Very often a baby bird is pushed out of the nest and it tumbles to the earth. With luck, it falls into tall grass or a bed of pine straw. Then the mother bird lights nearby and mimics behavior that will be needed to survive. Thank you to all who have pushed me and allowed me to mimic their techniques and topics. "I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan, like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand" ( Bob Dylan, 1981 )
